Initial Consultation

At your first visit, Dr. Johnston will spend some time taking a medical history, which will include questions about your general health and lifestyle, as well as asking you about the symptoms or injuries that you are seeking help with. With your consent, he will then perform a physical and structural examination which is likely to involve touching the areas of your body that are experiencing pain and asking you to move around. He will also look at test results, x-rays and scan reports if these are available.

After conducting a complete physical and structural exam, he will then have you lie on the examination table for osteopathic treatment. A typical treatment will involve the gentle and precise application of force. Each treatment is unique according to the findings in that day’s evaluation and the treatment goal is to improve tissue and joint motion, increase vascular and lymphatic circulation and balance the autonomic nervous system.

Dr. Johnston will make a diagnosis and discuss a course of treatment with you. This may involve visiting him a few times for manual therapy, some exercises that you can do by yourself and some lifestyle changes. The number of visits will depend on the severity and duration of the illness or injury. In addition, prescriptions for nutraceuticals, medications or diagnostic tests may be given.*

Patients often experience a sense of deep relaxation, tingling, fluid flows and relief of pain.* Emotional releases may occur as well. You may experience some discomfort during and after treatment.* Following treatment, some patients report mild soreness in the area of their body that was treated, this can usually be relieved with an over the counter pain killer or natural remedy and will go away within 48 hours.*
